About the Author. Maulana Maududi, whose full legal name was Syed Abul A'ala Maududi was born on September 25, 1903 in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Hyderabad, India. Near the end of his life he became ill and traveled to Buffalo, New York USA, where his son was a practicing medical doctor. He died there on September 22, 1979. His departure from his country and subsequent death away from his country caused a great controversy among his followers. In their ignorance, they regarded Pakistan as the best country in the world with the most advanced facilities, so why should he leave there? In addition, Muslims tend to be fatalistic. They believe that the date and hour of their death has already been written in a book long ago and only God can determine the date of death, so why travel to seek medical treatment? Nevertheless, the group he founded, Jamaat-e-Islami, has continued to flourish and grow. During his lifetime, his ideas were recognized as radical and dangerous, even more-so because of his strong power of the pen and his writing ability. Maulana Maududi was imprisoned many times and even sentenced to death, but his death sentence was commuted and he got out of jail and continued to write.
